Women's Basketball
Player Story: Andrea Mangione
Before Andrea Mangione came to Le Moyne, a Women’s Club Basketball team wasn’t even on the near horizon for female basketball players. With the help of a few of her friends, Mangione managed to start the team that has since made her feel like she has a second “family.”
She said, “I tried playing intramurals, but wanted to play teams other than the ones I saw every week. It [the club team] gave us more competition, but also allowed us to play as a Le Moyne team against other schools, and more importantly gave us the feeling of being part of a team again.”
Mangione tells us she has been playing basketball since she was in the 4th grade, and her former coach was her dad.
“I love the energy and physicality of the sport, and continued playing very competitively through high school, where my [high school] team made it to the New York State Class AA championship game.”
She tells us that being on the Club Basketball team at Le Moyne, “gives you an instant group of friends with similar interests.” Mangione explains how the team helped her to bond with girls “I may have not otherwise met.”
When asked if Mangione would suggest playing on the team she said she would strongly recommend it. Explaining that playing is competitive with others schools, and it offers the same team aspect that most former high school athletes might feel empty without if they’re not playing a varsity sport in college.
